Mohammad Mostafa Kamal (Bir Srestha)

Kamal, (Bir Srestha) Mohammad Mostafa (1947-1971)  distinguished freedom fighter and a martyr in the war of liberation. Mostafa Kamal was born at village West Hajipur under daulatkhan upazila of Bhola district.

He joined the East Bengal Regiment as a soldier on 16 December 1967, and on completion of training he had his posting at the Fourth East Bengal Regiment in Comilla. In March 1971, he was transferred to the headquarters of the Regiment at Brahmanbaria whence he joined the War of Liberation. During the War he had the status of a Lance Nayek, and was posted at village Daruin in Akhaura as a section commander. The Pak-army launched an attack on the second platoon of the Fourth East Bengal Regiment at village Daruin on 17 April. In the encounter that followed Mostafa Kamal was killed after a heroic resistance.

Akhaura Upazila

Akhaura Upazila (brahmanbaria district) with an area of 99.28 sq km, is bounded by brahmanbaria sadar upazila on the north, kasba upazila on the south, Tripura State of India on the east and brahmanbaria sadar upazila on the west. Main rivers are Pagla. Mandail Beel is notable.

Akhaura (Town) The town is now a municipality with an area of 2.35 sq km and population 32435; male 50.43%, female 49.57%. It has 9 wards and 23 mahallas. Literacy rate among the town people is 51.5%. Akhaura is an important Railway Junction of Bangladesh. Chittagong, Sylhet, Mymensingh and Dhaka are connected through this Junction. The town has two dakbungalows. Railway pollice thana 1.

Administration Akhaura thana, now an upazila, was established in 1976. The upazila consists of five union parishads, 107 mouzas and 225 villages.
