Akhaura Upazila (brahmanbaria district) with an area of 99.28 sq km, is bounded by brahmanbaria sadar upazila on the north, kasba upazila on the south, Tripura State of India on the east and brahmanbaria sadar upazila on the west. Main rivers are Pagla. Mandail Beel is notable.
Akhaura (Town) The town is now a municipality with an area of 2.35 sq km and population 32435; male 50.43%, female 49.57%. It has 9 wards and 23 mahallas. Literacy rate among the town people is 51.5%. Akhaura is an important Railway Junction of Bangladesh. Chittagong, Sylhet, Mymensingh and Dhaka are connected through this Junction. Administration Akhaura thana, now an upazila, was established in 1976. The upazila consists of five union parishads, 107 mouzas and 225 villages.
